Last semester was the first time that I ever did anything with radio broadcast. When I first learned about doing it, I did think that it was going to be pretty lame. However, to my surprise I really liked it.
This summer was also the first time that I really listened to NPR, and many of the stories I found really interesting to listen to.
Over the summer this was one of my favorites that I heard.
What I really liked about radio pieces was the opportunity to paint a picture of the story. One of the stories that I did for J2150 was an audio postcard on First Fridays, and it was great to interview people without a camera in front of their faces. I found that the other benefit of audio was that it allowed for me to create something in Adobe with a little more freedom, I liked being able to write a script and not have to match visuals to it. This allowed for me to tackle a wider range of topics.
Another story that really piqued my interest this summer was a Planet Money podcast about if recycling is really worth it (spoiler: not as much as you could think).
I enjoyed the fact that this story was able to present a topic that could maybe not be that interesting, but the nat sounds made it more interesting.
I was surprised that I enjoyed audio stories, and I have been very glad that I have been able to many audio stories for J4804 and I hope to do more in the future.
I found an audio story on KBIA about a net-zero home that is very similar to a story that I did this summer for a magazine about an energy efficient home. While the story that I did was on a home that was already constructed, it was very interesting to listen to a similar story to what I had done in a different medium.
Next semester I hope to do more audio stories to build that skill.
